2008 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the camshaft and its components on 2008 Toyota Corolla?
A: The camshaft installation process begins with attaching the camshaft timing gear to the camshaft after moving the straight pin out of the key groove. Then rotate the gear towards the left as you gently push it against the camshaft until the pin enters the groove but keeps the gear from moving in the retard angle direction. When the gear friction meets the camshaft without clearance you should tighten the fringe bolt to 40 ft-lb torque (551 kg-cm, 54 Nm). The equipment used to move the camshaft timing gear must reach the most retarded position and remain secured in that spot. Attachment of the timing chain to the camshaft timing gear should involve marking alignment with timing marks and verifying proper sequence of front numerals before tightening bolts to 13 Nm (133 kg-cm, 10 ft-lb). Place the No. 2 camshaft on its designated position in the cylinder head and temporarily install the camshaft timing gear set bolt while verifying sequence before tightening it to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft-lbf). After applying 23 Nm torque to bearing cap No. 1 install a wrench to hold the camshaft before tightening the timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm with caution toward the valve lifter. Verify that both timing marks on the timing chain cover surface match painted links on the timing chain as the groove points toward the cover's timing mark "0". Place the chain tensioner by cleaning the O-ring first then setting the hook followed by applying thin engine oil to the O-ring before securing the tensioner with two nuts at 9.0 Nm (92 kg-cm, 80 in-lb) while being careful not to twist the O-ring. During the hook installation if the plunger separates reset it before taking the crankshaft counterclockwise action to separate the plunger knock pin from the hook while performing a clockwise rotation to verify the plunger has extended the slipper; if no slipper extension occurs use a screwdriver to manually push it inside the chain tensioner. Installation of these components must begin with checking and adjusting valve clearance when needed and continues with the sub-assembly of the cylinder head cover followed by the ignition coil assembly before connecting the negative battery terminal at 5.4 Nm (55 kg-cm, 48 in-lb). The last step includes leak testing for engine oil then installing the RH engine under cover with cylinder head cover No. 2.
