2007 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the camshaft on 2007 Toyota Corolla?
A: The proper order for servicing the camshaft starts with disconnecting battery negative and removing engine under cover RH then cylinder head cover No.2 and finally the ignition coil assembly. After removing the cylinder head cover sub-assembly you should set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression. Begin by marking the timing chain and camshaft timing gears before removing their 2 nuts and tensioning chain. Perform this operation without rotating the crankshaft when the tensioner is absent. To accomplish this task you must grasp the camshaft with a wrench while you first loosen the camshaft timing gear set bolt before proceeding to equally loosen the specified 11 bolts and their corresponding bearing caps which will be followed by removal of the camshaft timing gear set bolt. The camshaft removal process starts with evenly loosening and removing the eight bolts in sequence and the four bearing caps before extracting the camshaft and camshaft timing gear while using your hand to hold the timing chain and securing it with string to stop any items from falling into the timing chain cover. Placing the camshaft in a vise to check the timing gear locking before covering all 4 cam journal oil paths with vinyl tape then puncturing the tape near the advance and retard sections under air pressure will verify the smooth rotation and secure position of the timing gear. Follow the same prevention steps to remove the camshaft timing gear assembly and then install it by placing it on the camshaft while tightening the fringe bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) then verify that it moves to the retard angle position. Fasten the camshaft timing gear after aligning its paint mark while tightening the bolts to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.). Next, install the No. 2 camshaft and apply it to the timing gear set bolt as a temporary measure before tightening all bolts to the same torque value. Install bearing cap No. 1 to 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.) while tightening the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) without damaging the valve lifter and verifying the alignment of the timing marks. install the chain tensioner while making sure the O-ring remains clean and lubricated, use torque of 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.), afterward rotate the crankshaft to unhook the plunger knock pin. Procedure includes valve clearance inspection followed by cover and coil assembly placement and five-point torque of the battery terminal while leak check of the engine followed by right-hand number two cover and under engine installation.
