2006 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the camshaft on 2006 Toyota Corolla?
A: The initial step for servicing or repairing the 1ZZ-FE camshaft includes disconnecting the battery negative terminal followed by removal of the engine under cover RH, cylinder head cover No.2, ignition coil assembly, and cylinder head cover sub-assembly. For camshaft No.2 removal proceed by positioning the first cylinder to TDC/compression position while using matchmarks to mark timing chain and gears then take off two nuts and the chain tensioner while avoiding crankshaft rotation without the chain tensioner. Use a wrench to hold the camshaft before loosening the camshaft timing gear set bolt and uniformly loosening each of the 11 specified sequence bolts to remove those along with the 5 bearing caps until the camshaft timing gear can be removed. Move on to the camshaft removal by performing uniform bolt loosening of the specified sequence along with removal of the 8 bolts and 4 bearing caps. After that remove the camshaft and camshaft timing gear while holding the timing chain with your hands then tie the chain with string to stop items from dropping into the timing chain cover. The camshaft timing gear assembly requires inspection where the camshaft is fixed in a vise to verify locking operation and require vinyl tape coverage of all 4 cam journal oil paths then puncturing the tape on the advance and retard sides followed by air pressure application to check the camshaft timing gear movements forward. To verify the camshaft timing gear operation use manual inspection then secure it in its most retarded position. Maintain the camshaft in a vise before you cover its oil paths with tape and puncture the tape to allow air pressure that should cause camshaft timing gear revolutions in the timing advance direction after you remove the fringe bolt and camshaft timing gear while leaving all other 4 bolts in place. During camshaft timing gear assembly installation position the straight pin from the key groove and rotate the gear onto the camshaft one time with gentle pressure before confirming zero gap between the fringe and camshaft then apply 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) torque to the fringe bolt. Install the camshaft timing gear onto the camshaft timing gear with the paint mark aligned with the timing mark, tighten the bolts to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.), then install the No.2 camshaft with the paint mark aligned, temporarily install the camshaft timing gear set bolt, tighten the bolts to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.), install bearing cap No.1 to 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.), and while holding the camshaft, tighten the camshaft timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.), ensuring not to damage the valve lifter. Check for proper alignment between both timing chain cover surface points and timing marks that match their painted links on the chain. Then install the timing chain tensioner with clean and lubricated O-ring before installing 2 nuts to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) torque setting. Avoid twisting the O-ring while performing this task. First engage the crankshaft counterclockwise to remove the plunger knock pin yet clockwise rotation verifies slipper displacement into the chain tensioner by the plunger when needed. The service completes with valve clearance inspection followed by the installation of the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and ignition coil assembly and negative battery terminal reconnection to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) before leak check and final positioning of cylinder head cover No.2 and engine under cover RH installation.
