2005 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the camshaft on 2005 Toyota Corolla?
A: The service of the camshaft (1ZZ-FE) requires starting with battery negative terminal disconnection then moving onto removing engine under cover RH followed by cylinder head cover No.2 ignition coil assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Begin by positioning the No.1 cylinder to its compression point of TDC then proceed with removing the No.2 camshaft through marking the timing chain and camshaft timing gears with matchmarks. Implement the steps of removing the 2 nuts holding the chain tensioner, releasing the camshaft timing gear set bolt while supporting the camshaft before evenly loosening the 11 bolts and 5 bearing caps which results in the removal of the camshaft timing gear. Begin by taking out the camshaft after unfastening the 8 bolts and 4 bearing caps. While holding the timing chain, secure it with string to avoid loose components from falling inside the timing chain cover. To check the camshaft timing gear assembly users must clamp the camshaft in a vise before testing that the timing gear maintains its locked position and wrapping vinyl tape around the oil paths and puncturing the tape with air pressure while observing a smooth revolution together with a secure locking mechanism. The camshaft timing gear assembly can be removed following clamping steps and tape covering then issuing air pressure to check for gear motion and finally unfastening the fringe bolt and camshaft timing gear. The installation process for camshaft timing gear assembly requires the straight pin to be removed from the key groove before turning the gear toward the camshaft with proper force while assessing clearance and tightening the fringe bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). Install the camshaft while lining up its timing chain to the camshaft timing gear before setting the bolt torque to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.). Then finish by installing the No.2 camshaft along with its temporary timing gear set bolt and torque-setting it at the same amount. Fix bearing cap No.1 while tightening the timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.) with a wrench while holding the camshaft properly align the timing marks. Connect the chain tensioner with minimal oil on the O-ring and provide a torque of 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) while rotating the crankshaft in counterclockwise fashion to remove the plunger knock pin from the hook then check the slipper position. The process ends with valve clearance inspection followed by sub-assembly installation of the ignition coil assembly together with reconnection of the battery negative terminal at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) before leak tests and subsequent installation of cylinder head cover No.2 and engine under cover RH.
