2004 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2004 Toyota Corolla?
A: Start the camshaft replacement by taking out the engine under cover RH and then the cylinder head cover No.2 following removal of 2 screws and 3 clips and engine under cover. The removal process starts with a clockwise turn of the tensioner V-ribbed belt to loosen the fan and generator V belt before taking down the belt while slowly returning the tensioner. To proceed with the removal of Engine Mounting Insulator Sub-assembly RH the technician should place a wooden block between engine and jack while unscrewing PS oil pump reservoir along with 4 bolts and 2 nuts. The engine wire requires removal through 5 clamps then detachment of 4 ignition coil connectors followed by the bolt and nut removal securing the wire. The ignition coil assembly requires removal by first taking out four bolts and four ignition coils followed by disconnecting ventilation hoses from the cylinder head cover. The removal process for the cylinder head cover sub-assembly starts by disassembling nine bolts with two seal washers followed by two nuts and finally three clamp brackets. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression through alignment of the crankshaft pulley groove with timing mark "0" while maintaining alignment between the VVT timing sprocket point mark and the camshaft timing sprocket point mark. Detaching the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly requires you to remove its bolt followed by its nut and tensioner. The crankshaft should never revolve when the chain tensioner is absent; the No.1 cylinder needs to be set at TDC/compression position while you apply match marks to the timing chain and camshaft timing sprockets before removing both tensioner nuts. Apply a wrench to fix the camshaft for loosening the camshaft timing gear set bolt after which you should loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts on No. 2 camshaft following a specified order to remove the caps. Locate and eliminate the camshaft timing gear from the engine while loosening the specified bolts in sequence from the camshaft bearing cap followed by extraction of the camshaft through string attachment for preventing objects from entering the timing chain cover area. Confirm the gear assembly lock while releasing its lock pin and verify smooth rotation and complete engagement at the most retarded position. Use air pressure to check the gear movement after wrapping oil paths with vinyl tape and removing the camshaft timing gear assembly with its gear secure. Secure the camshaft timing gear assembly by placing it against the camshaft without any gap between the fringe and the camshaft before tightening the fringe bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). The installation begins with camshaft alignment of the timing chain to the camshaft timing gear followed by bolt tightening to 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.), and subsequent bearing cap No. 1 tightening to 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm, 17 ft. lbs.). Store the camshaft and secure the timing gear set bolt to 54 Nm (551 kgf-cm, 40 ft. lbs.). Make sure to not damage the valve lifter. After cleaning the chain tensioner O-ring the mechanic should apply engine oil before tightening it to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm) torque. Use the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly along with its nut and bolt to achieve the required torques before installing the cylinder head cover sub-assembly while applying seal packing (Part No. 08826-00080 or equivalent) at two specified points and performing multiple bolt and nut tightens. The last step involves the installation of ignition coil assembly and engine wire along with engine mounting insulator sub-assembly RH and cylinder head cover No.2 followed by a leak test of the engine oil during the entire procedure.
