2005 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the timing chain on 2005 Toyota Corolla?
A: Service of the 1ZZ-FE timing chain starts with disconnecting the battery negative terminal followed by unbolting the front right wheel and engine under cover and cylinder head cover No.2 while removing their 2 nuts and 2 clips. The procedure starts by draining engine coolant and removing the fan combined with the generator V belt and disconnecting the vane pump assembly and generator assembly. Detailed service of the 1ZZ-FE engine timing chain begins with removing the engine mounting insulator RH using unfastened oil reservoir bracket No.1 bolts and engine supports through a wooden block resting atop a jack. Follow the steps by disconnecting four ignition coil connectors before removing two nuts followed by the removal of four ignition coils. You should detach ventilation hoses before unbolting the cylinder head cover sub-assembly together with its clamp brackets to remove the assembly. Detach the elements that include the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly with the engine mounting bracket RH along with the water pump assembly while pulling apart the crankshaft position sensor. To set the Number 1 cylinder at TDC compression position put the crankshaft pulley timing marks at "0" while maintaining appropriate alignment of the camshaft timing gears. The removal procedure begins with the crankshaft pulley's uninstallation using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) followed by the chain tensioner assembly No.1 but attention must be paid to avoid turning the crankshaft without it. Gently detach the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly by unbolting it while carefully prying it off before removing both the timing chain or belt cover oil seal. Pry out the chain sub-assembly while protecting the engine using 2 screwdrivers after removing the crankshaft position sensor plate No.1 and the chain tensioner slipper. The new chain sub-assembly installation requires the No.1 cylinder to reach TDC/compression position with camshaft timing gears properly aligned before using Special Service Tool: 09223-22010 to set the crankshaft timing gear. Install the chain tensioner slipper and crankshaft position sensor plate No.1 followed by the timing chain or belt cover oil seal while verifying that the oil seal faces the cover edge. Seal packing, Water pump Part No.08826-00100 or equivalent for timing chain cover and part No.08826-00080 or equivalent for the other part, needs application before bolt and nut installation with specified torque. Take the chain tensioner assembly No.1 with its clean lubricated O-ring then use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to install and torque the crankshaft pulley correctly. Set in position all components starting with the crankshaft position sensor together with the water pump assembly, engine mounting bracket RH, V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and ending with the cylinder head cover sub-assembly while applying seal packing when necessary. The service procedure requires the installation of ignition coil assembly together with engine mounting insulator RH and generator assembly and vane pump assembly and fan and generator V belt. The repair process requires adding engine coolant together with reconnecting the battery negative terminal and leak inspection. Install both cylinder head cover No.2 and the front right wheel and torque all components according to their specified values.
