2009 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on 2009 Toyota Corolla?
A: The 2ZR-FE engine camshaft removal process begins by removing the engine assembly with transaxle and following with engine stand installation. Start by dismantling the intake manifold and the intervening components including fuel tube sub-assembly, fuel delivery pipe sub-assembly, fuel injector assembly, ignition coil assembly, oil level dipstick sub-assembly, No. 1 exhaust manifold heat insulator, manifold stay, exhaust manifold, ventilation hose, No. 3 water by-pass hose, No. 1 water by-pass pipe, water by-pass hose, inlet water hose, inlet water, thermostat, radio setting condenser, and cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Place the No. 1 cylinder at top dead center compression position before uninstalling the crankshaft pulley and other listed components one by one from the engine. Examine the camshaft timing gear assembly using three evaluation methods that include checking the lock while sealing the VVT oil hole with adhesive tape followed by pricking the tape and applying 150 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2, 22 psi) air pressure for lock pin release. Before removing the adhesive tape the technician should apply counter-clockwise force on the camshaft timing gear assembly while verifying its smooth movement extends from 26.5 to 28.5 degrees Use 200 kPa (2.0 kgf/cm2, 28 psi) air pressure to free the exhaust lock pin of the camshaft timing gear assembly; then follow with gear rotation in the retard direction (clockwise) until the movable range reaches (19 to 21 degrees). The technician removes both the camshaft timing gear assembly and camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly by holding the hexagonal shape of the camshaft as he or she removes the flange bolts while releasing the lock pin and maintaining the assembly at a horizontal orientation. To detach the camshaft bearing cap start by equally loosening all 10 and 15 bearing cap bolts in their specified order before extracting the 5 bearing caps. Finish the procedure by taking out the camshaft combined with the No. 2 camshaft and No. 1 valve rocker arm sub-assembly and valve lash adjuster assembly and No. 1 and No. 2 camshaft bearings along with the camshaft housing sub-assembly by carefully using bolts then prying off this assembly to maintain contact surface quality.
