2008 Toyota Avalon Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to install the rack and pinion power steering gear assembly on 2008 Toyota Avalon?
A: The rack and pinion power steering rack and pinion assembly needs to be fixed using 2 bolts along with 2 nuts with torques set at 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft-lbf) but without rotating the nut because of its built-in stopper. Installation of the power steering rack and pinion assembly requires attaching the pressure feed tube assembly with Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 through torque application of 22 Nm (227 kgf-cm, 16 ft-lbf). Ensure the torque wrench has a 300 mm (11.81 in.) fulcrum extending perpendicular to the wrench. Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 along with established torque specifications should also be used to assemble the return tube assembly. Install the pressure feed tube clamp with 2 bolts after tightening them to 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 87 in-lbf). The next step involves installing the stabilizer bar bush No.1 to the stabilizer bar before attaching the front stabilizer bracket No.1 LH with 2 bolts tightened to 27 Nm (275 kgf-cm, 20 ft-lbf) torque. The procedure should be followed for the RH side. The procedure for installing front stabilizer link assemblies should be performed identically for the LH and RH sides. The castling nut needs to be torqued at 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbf) when it connects the tie rod assembly LH to the steering knuckle LH before a new cotter pin installation and further nut tightening up to 60 degrees if the holes are not aligned. Repeat this for the RH side. Install the bolt between the steering intermediate shaft assembly and power steering rack and pinion assembly keeping the matchmarks aligned at 35 Nm locking torque (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft-lbf). The power steering system requires fluid bleeding after its setup while technicians should check for leaks and complete front fender apron seal installation for both left-hand and right-hand sides. The installation process ends with fitting the front wheel followed by checking both front wheel alignment and positions.
