2009 Toyota Avalon Rack And Pinion Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the rack and pinion power steering gear on 2009 Toyota Avalon?
A: The indicated parts of the rack and pinion power steering rack and pinion should receive a coating of power steering fluid or MP grease or silicon grease or molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease before replacement. Start the procedure by setting front wheels in a straight position and taking off the front wheel. Start by unfastening the front fender apron seals that are present on both sides of the rack and pinion power steering system. Secure the steering wheel in position with a seat belt to avoid spinning while removing the bolt for later reinstallation. Record the positions between the steering intermediate shaft assembly and power steering rack and pinion assembly before their parting occurs. Professionals should split the left tie rod assembly from the left steering knuckle by removing its castle nut and cotter pin then using Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. The right side assembly needs the same treatment. Circumference both sides of the stabilizer link assemblies and stabilizer brackets No.1 by extracting their bolts and bushings. The power steering rack and pinion assembly requires Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 to disconnect both tube assemblies before extraction of the pressure feed tube clamp's two retaining bolts. To complete the power steering rack and pinion assembly removal process first remove the two bolts and nuts by not rotating the nut and leave the bolt unfastened with the nut in place.
