2009 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the rack and pinion power steering gear assembly on 2009 Toyota Avalon?
A: Would install the rack and pinion power rack and pinion assembly by locking it with two bolts and nuts where torque reaches 70 Nm (714 kgf-cm, 52 ft-lbf) while leaving the nut stationary as it has an integrated stopper. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 to fasten the pressure feed tube assembly to the rack and pinion assembly while torquing it to 22 Nm (227 kgf-cm, 16 ft-lbf) with a torque wrench that requires a 300 mm (11.81 in.) fulcrum length and must be positioned parallel to the wrench. Repeat the installation on the return tube assembly by using Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 with equivalent torque specifications. The pressure feed tube clamp must receive two bolts secured at 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 87 in-lbf). The procedure requires installation of stabilizer bar bush No.1 to the stabilizer bar then front stabilizer bracket No.1 LH with 2 bolts tightened to 27 Nm and repeating the same bolt tightening step for the RH side. The dual procedure installs front stabilizer link assemblies to both left-hand and right-hand boards. When joining the tie rod assembly LH to the steering knuckle LH use the castle nut with 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbf) torque and replace it with a new cotter pin then extend the nut an additional 60° if the holes have misalignment. The same bolt-up procedure must be applied to the tie rod assembly located on the right-hand side. Install the bolt between the steering intermediate shaft assembly and rack and pinion assembly according to these matchmarks while tightening it to 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft-lbf). Bleed the rack and pinion fluid after installation and check for leaks then place the front fender apron seals on both the left-hand side and right-hand side. Per the last step both front wheels need to go on before checking the wheel alignment together with the front wheel condition.
