2007 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH on 2007 Toyota Tundra?
A: To service and repair the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH, begin with an on-vehicle inspection by applying the parking brake, turning the ignition switch ON, and depressing the brake pedal to ensure the engine starts only in N or P positions, while confirming that the Back Up light and reverse warning buzzer activate in R. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, noting that some systems require initialization after reconnection and that the navigation system needs approximately 90 seconds to record memory after turning the ignition OFF. First remove the transmission control cable assembly by unfastening its retaining nut but leave the park/neutral position switch assembly in place. Next proceed to disconnect the switch connector and remove the nut followed by the spring washer and transmission control shaft lever RH and bend the tabs on the lock washer with a screwdriver to replace the lock nut and lock washer along with the bolt. Test the park/neutral position switch assembly by checking its resistance levels and replace it when the values differ from technical specifications. Loosen the bolt first, move the shift lever to N position, position the groove onto the neutral basic line, hold the switch in place then tighten the bolt to 130 kgf-cm (13 Nm, 10 ft. lbs.). To install the device place it on the manual valve shaft before putting the bolt in place to install a new lock washer and screw it with a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs). First install the control shaft lever RH temporarily and turn it counterclockwise to its stop point. Proceed to move the shaft clockwise two notches before aligning the bearing and locking it into position with the bolt tightened at 13 Nm (133 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.). Begin by bending the tabs of the lock washer before installing the transmission control shaft lever RH with the spring washer and nut that should be tightened to 16 Nm (163 kgf-cm, 12 ft. lbs.). Complete the installation by connecting the switch connector. Although facing inward toward the passenger compartment, install the transmission control cable assembly before tightening its nut up to 14 Nm (143 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.). After attaching the cable to the negative battery terminal you must check the shift lever position before inspecting the park/neutral position switch assembly.
