2007 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the rear shock absorber on 2007 Toyota RAV4?
A: Start servicing the rear shock absorber by first removing the rear wheel and its assembly from the LH side. Support the No. 2 suspension arm LH with a jack which should have a wooden or rubber block between it and the arm. The first step of service involves removing the bolt and 2 nuts from the suspension member and axle carrier followed by disconnecting the shock absorber with its bracket by separate 2 bolts and finally removing the nut and bolt from the shock absorber's upper side before completely removing the part. After nut and bolt removal from the bracket follow up by fixing the nut into place before loosening the bolt. The LH assembly of the rear shock absorber requires a check by extending and compressing the rod to detect irregular resistance as well as abnormal sounds; install a new shock absorber if failures are observed. The first step for installation includes attaching the bracket to the shock absorber using bolt and nut connections with the nut maintained in its fixed position. Then position the upper side of the shock absorber on the suspension member with temporary bolt and nut attachments and secure the nut. The shock absorber installation requires users to first fasten it to the axle carrier through 2 bolts torqued to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Installation continues with the suspension arm placed on the suspension member and axle carrier by the bolt coupled with 2 nuts. Install the rear wheel initially before tightening it to 103 Nm while maintaining 1,050 kgf-cm or 76 ft. lbs. torque on the assembly. Perform several suspension presses after vehicle lowering then secure the rear shock absorber assembly LH by fixing the nut in place followed by bolt tightening to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Conclude the process by checking and correcting the rear wheel alignment. To dispose of the rear shock absorber assembly LH tension the shock absorber rod until fully elongated and fix it in a vise at an angle before drilling through the designated cylinder center with a hole to exhaust gas inside while wearing protective eyewear and ensuring the cutting area is covered because this gas has no color or odor and poses no danger.
