2007 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front Wheel Hub on 2007 Toyota Prius?
A: The initial step for front wheel hub servicing and repair requires front wheel removal together with front disc brake caliper and front disc collection keeping detailed marks for disc-hub alignment. A dial indicator should be used to check wheel hub center looseness which must not exceed 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch). Replace the wheel hub if this limit is surpassed. The testing procedure using the dial indicator should be conducted once more to evaluate wheel hub runout before reinstalling the front components while applying torques of 109 Nm (1,114 kgf-cm, 81 ft. lbs.) on the caliper and 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) on the wheel. You must remove the wheel together with front wheel hub nut LH before disconnecting the front speed sensor LH and front disc brake caliper assembly LH by unfastening its two bolts as you support the caliper. First disconnect the front disc and tie rod end sub-assembly LH as well as the lower front suspension arm sub-assembly LH to remove the front wheel assembly LH using a plastic-faced hammer on the front drive shaft. Pay attention to avoid damaging either the drive shaft outboard joint boot or speed sensor rotor during the process. To proceed with front wheel replacement you should use a screwdriver to remove the front No. 1 wheel bearing dust deflector LH before using Special Service Tool: 09611-36020 to detach the lower ball joint assembly while maintaining the steering knuckle safe from damage. The front wheel hub sub-assembly LH needs to be removed by first unsticking the four bolts and removing the dust cover. The first step during installation requires securing the front wheel hub sub-assembly LH at 56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.) through four bolts followed by installing the lower ball joint assembly at 71 Nm (724 kgf-cm, 52 ft. lbs.). Proper grease application and clip alignment checks must be performed. Mount the new dust deflector by using Special Service Tools: 09950-70010 (09951-07150), 09608-32010, 09950-60020 (09951-00720) and a press to correctly align the holes. Two bolts along with nuts will securely attach the front wheel to the shock absorber at 153 Nm (1,560 kgf-cm, 113 ft. lbs.) while ensuring a proper drive shaft spline position. Following restoration of the front No. 1 suspension arm sub-assembly lower LH and tie rod end sub-assembly LH, the technician should install the front disc and front disc brake caliper assembly LH and torque the caliper to 81 ft. lbs. (109 Nm, 1,114 kgf-cm). A mechanic should use a 30 mm socket wrench to tighten the new hub nut to 216 Nm (2,200 kgf-cm, 159 ft. lbs.). Afterward, they should stake the hub nut with a chisel and hammer before setting the front wheel at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). To complete the service replace existing parts by performing an inspection and adjustment of the front wheel alignment in addition to testing the ABS speed sensor signal.
