2007 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rear shock absorber on 2007 Toyota Matrix?
A: You must start your repair by taking off the rear wheel then moving to deck board No. 2 and deck board sub-assembly and deck floor box rear before taking away the luggage compartment tray and shock absorber head cover. Support the rear axle beam assembly with a jack beneath it then detach 2 bolts joined by nuts alongside the nut followed by the rear shock absorber LH cushion retainer and the rear shock absorber with coil spring. The rear LH shock absorber assembly requires Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 for coil spring compression at which time an impact wrench must be avoided to protect the tool from damage. Use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the piston rod while removing the nut before extracting the rear shock absorber cushion washer No. 1, rear suspension support, rear spring front bracket sub-assembly LH, LH support assembly rear suspension, rear coil spring insulator upper LH, rear spring bumper No. 1 LH, and coil spring rear LH. Compress and extend the shock absorber rod during inspection to check for abnormal resistance and unusual sounds; replace all components showing signs of damage. After readjusting the coil spring rear LH by using the special service tool and inserting it into the shock absorber assembly the lower end must fit inside the spring lower seat gap. Place the rear spring bumper No. 1 LH and LH support assembly rear suspension correctly before setting the rear coil spring insulator upper LH onto the rear spring front bracket sub-assembly LH so the components remain properly aligned. Install the rear suspension support with the rear shock absorber cushion washer No. 1. Then briefly tighten the new center nut after removing the tool. Check realignment before securing the nut with 56 Nm (571 kgf/cm, 41 ft. lbs.) torque. Fasten the rear shock absorber using a coil spring and secure it through 2 nuts and bolt with a torque value at 80 Nm (816 kgf/cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Then attach the rear shock absorber LH cushion retainer. After the vehicle suspension stabilizes the installer should put back the shock absorber head cover and deck board No. 2 and deck floor box rear and deck board sub-assembly and luggage compartment tray. The suspension becomes stable after the vehicle receives its rear wheel and lowering process along with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf/cm, 76 ft.lbs) and additional bouncing of the vehicle for suspension stabilization. Expansion of the rear shock absorber with coil spring nut to 80 Nm (816 kgf/cm, 59 ft. lbs.) must be followed by rear wheel alignment inspection. Disassembling the rear LH shock absorber assembly requires extension of the rod followed by drilling to release the gas through a hole in the cylinder while being cautious about fragment hazards because the discharged gas contains no harmful odor or poison.
