2007 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2007 Toyota Matrix?
A: The process of servicing parking brake cables starts by taking off rear wheels and continuing with removal of drum-type rear brake drums followed by drum-type front brake shoes. The next step requires technicians to take off the parking brake shoe strut set LH and the rear brake automatic adjust lever LH for drum types in addition to the rear brake shoe for drum types. Drum service requires the removal of rear disc brake caliper assembly LH followed by the disc rear disc. Then remove parking brake shoe strut LH, parking brake shoe adjusting screw set, both parking brake shoe assemblies LH No. 1 and No. 2, and their parking brake shoe lever LH. Proceed to remove the parking brake cable assembly No. 3 from the backing plate by removing the bolt then separating it. The removal of the exhaust pipe assembly front alongside front floor heat insulators No. 1 and No. 2 requires 5 nut removal along with fuel tank protector No. 1. The sequence for parking brake cable assembly No. 3 removal begins with disconnection of the skid control sensor wire harness clip from the clamp followed by 4 bolt and cable retainer removal from the body as well as separation from the equalizer. To install parking brake cable assembly No. 3 to the equalizer, use the 4 bolts and cable retainer to fix it before torquing to 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). Reinstall fuel tank protector No. 1 by securing it with the 5 nuts while torquing them to 5.5 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). Proceed with installation by starting with front floor heat insulator No. 2, then front floor heat insulator No. 1 as the next stage before moving onto the exhaust pipe assembly front. Use the bolt to connect parking brake cable assembly No. 3 to the backing plate before torquing it to 7.8 N m (80 kgf cm, 69 in. lbf). Begin by increasing friction resistance then putting in place the rear brake shoe, rear brake automatic adjust lever LH, and parking brake shoe strut set LH for drum types and finally adding the front brake shoe. Installation of the drum brake system must be checked before putting on the rear brake drum sub-assembly and performing the rear drum brake shoe clearance adjustment. The parking brake shoe lever LH along with both parking brake shoe assemblies LH No. 2 and No. 1 and the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set and the parking brake shoe strut LH require high-temperature grease application for disc types. Installation of the rear disc must precede a brake shoe clearance adjustment which leads to connecting the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH. The final step is to place the rear wheel before torquing it up to 103 N m (1,050 kgf cm, 76 ft. lbf). Complete the check by inspecting parking brake lever distance and adjusting if needed along with exhaust leakage testing.
