2007 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the park/neutral safety switch on 2007 Toyota Highlander?
A: Begin the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH service and repair by taking out three pieces: the battery as well as engine under cover No. 1 and the air cleaner assembly. The procedure to separate the transmission control cable assembly involves the nut removal from the control shaft lever followed by the cable's connection removal from both the lever and the bracket with the clip while maintaining the resin guide pipe untouched. Detach the park/neutral position switch connector while you remove its nut along with washer and control shaft lever. Then use a screwdriver to pry up the lock plate and take out the lock plate and lock nut before pulling out the switch. Using the parking brake and ignition position set to ON the park/neutral position switch assembly should only activate engine start from N or P and activate reverse warning buzzer and Back Up light from R. Use continuity testing methods to find any detected failures in the system. The resistance check requires lifting the vehicle and disconnecting the switch connector first followed by the specific resistance measurements. Adjusting the switch assembly requires you to first loosen the two bolts before setting the shift lever to N position and aligning the groove with the neutral basic line. Following this you must securely fasten the bolts with torque at 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). An operation inspection should follow the adjustment process. Installation of the park/neutral position switch requires fixing it to the manual valve shaft by adding two temporary bolts then setting a new lock plate before tightening the nut to 6.9 N m (70 kgf cm, 61 in. lbf). After bending the control shaft lever counterclockwise until it stops and rotating it clockwise two times, install the lever while aligning the groove with the neutral basic line and tight the bolts to 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). After bending the lock plate tabs install the control shaft lever together with washer and nut until they reach 13 N m (133 kgf cm, 9 ft. lbf) torque and attach the switch connector. The control cable assembly connection starts by securing the control cable to the control shaft lever through the nut and achieving 13 N m (133 kgf cm, 10 ft. lbf) torque while adding a new clip to the bracket. Check the park/neutral position switch assembly operation before you adjust the shift lever position if needed and put back the air cleaner assembly and engine under cover No. 1 and the battery.
