2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
A: A service or repair of the parking brake cable requires removal of specific parts beginning with the parking brake hole cover sub-assembly followed by shift lever knob sub-assembly (for Manual Transmission and 4WD), console upper rear panel sub-assembly along with box bottom mat and front console box. The repair process should begin with removal of the rear wheel and separate rear disc brake caliper installation along with disc removal. Remove successively the parking brake shoe return tension spring, parking brake shoe strut and parking brake shoe. The right-hand installation requires removal of a parking brake cable heat insulator through two bolt removal and later removal of the parking brake cable by adjusting the nut and detaching cable ends from the parking brake pull rod followed by spring cap claw contraction to push the cable slightly out of the vehicle then removing two bolts between the cable and parking brake plate before securing the five bolts that keep the parking brake cable in place. The parking brake cable clamp should be detached from the cable body. To install the parking brake cable you must first place the parking brake cable clamp onto the parking brake cable; afterward install the 5 bolts at 13 N m (127 kgf cm, 9 ft. lbf.) torque followed by installing the two parking brake plate securing bolts at 8.0 N m (82 kgf cm, 71 in. lbf.). Affix the spring cap into the body structure while connecting the cable end to the parking brake pull rod. To install the parking brake components you must begin with attaching the heat insulator with 2 bolts that need a torque of 13 N m (127 kgf cm, 9 ft. lbf.). After that apply high-temperature grease and add the parking brake shoe and shoe strut and return tension spring. The installation of the rear disc begins after checking the parking brake. Brake shoe clearance needs adjustment before installing the rear disc brake caliper assembly and rear wheel with 112 N m (1,137 kgf cm, 82 ft. lbf). Install the parking brake hole cover assembly as the final step after putting back the shift lever knob sub-assembly (for 4WD) and Manual Transmission models and the console upper rear panel sub-assembly followed by the front console box and box bottom mat.
