2007 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the park/neutral safety switch on 2007 Toyota Corolla?
A: The first step to repair or service the park/neutral position switch requires removal of the battery as well as its carrier through unfastening the 4 bolts. The transmission control cable assembly should be disconnected by untucking the clip that holds the cable to the bracket and then removing the control cable from its lever after removing the nut on the control shaft lever. The first step requires separating the park/neutral position switch assembly by disconnecting its connector followed by nut removal and washing and control shaft lever access before prying out the lock plate to release the manual valve shaft nut and pulling out the switch after removing 2 bolts. A vehicle lift must be used to inspect the park/neutral position switch assembly through connector removal while checking resistance values against specifications for every shift lever location. Before adjustment the technician needs to activate the parking brake, swap the ignition to ON then press the brake pedal, verify the engine functions properly in N or P positions and check for correct bulb and buzzer activation in reverse (R) position. A failure detection requires continuity testing of the switch system. To achieve adjustment the operator first loosens the two bolts before correctly positioning the shift lever into N while aligning both the groove with the basic neutral line and tightly securing the bolts at 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.). Recheck the switch following any adjustment process. To install the park/neutral position switch attach it to the manual valve shaft then add 2 temporary bolts before placing a new lock plate followed by nut tightening to 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.). Turn the control shaft lever counterclockwise until stopping points are reached, continue clockwise rotation by two notches after which remove the lever to correctly position the groove at the neutral basic line and tighten bolts to 5.5 Nm (56 kgf-cm, 49 inch lbs.). The operator inserts a screwdriver under the lock plate to stake it in while installing the control shaft at 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 8 ft. lbs.) torque strength. The next step involves connector application to the park/neutral position switch. Securely install the transmission control cable assembly through temporary cable attachment to control shaft lever with a nut followed by bracket-mounting the clip to ensure proper cable insertion. Affix the battery carrier back in place using 4 bolts which need to be fastened at 13 Nm (132 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) before reinstalling the battery. Conclude the procedure by checking and adjusting the shift lever position as well as the park/neutral position switch assembly.
