Neutral Safety Switch

The first step to work on the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor requires air cleaner assembly uninstallation. Begin by disconnecting the park/neutral position switch connector after which workers must remove the park/neutral position switch through the sequential removal of the nut before removing the nut with washer along with the control shot lever. The procedure starts by using a screwdriver to prise away the lock plate followed by detaching the nut and lock plate and removing the two bolts which will pull out the park/neutral position switch. Install the park/neutral position switch through its two bolts while keeping the torque force at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Screw the new lock plate with its associated nut to a torque force of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.) and afterward bend the lock plate claws to secure the nut. Refer to the install manual to apply 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque for the nut while connecting the control cable to the control shaft using 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque force. After connecting the park/neutral position switch connector check the position operation to verify engine start-up limitation to N or P settings. Additional adjustment procedures should be performed if start-up is not restricted correctly. The last step involved installing the air cleaner assembly before performing a test drive of the vehicle.

Install a new lock plate and the nut, applying a torque of 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.), and bend the claws on the lock plate to secure the nut.

Disconnect the switch connector, remove the nut, washer, and control shaft lever, pry out the lock plate to remove the manual valve shaft nut, and finally remove the 2 bolts to pull out the park/neutral position switch.

Reinstall the air cleaner assembly and conduct a test drive of the vehicle.

Apply a torque of 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) when reinstalling the control shift lever with the nut.

Use a screwdriver to stake the nut with the lock plate.

Use a torque of 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) for the two bolts.

Remove the park/neutral position switch by taking off the nut, washer, and control shaft lever, prying out the lock washer, and removing the manual valve shaft nut.

Check the park/neutral position switch for continuity.

Reinstall the battery carrier with the 4 bolts, tightening them to 13 Nm (132 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.), then reinstall the battery.

A screwdriver.

Depress the brake pedal to ensure the engine starts only when the shift lever is in the N or P position, and does not start in any other position.

Remove the battery and battery carrier by taking out the 4 bolts.

Remove the nut, followed by the nut, washer, and control shift lever. Use a screwdriver to pry off the lock plate, then remove the nut and lock plate, and finally take out the two bolts.

Ensure a torque of 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) when installing the park/neutral position switch with the two bolts.

Tighten to 12.5 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) and connect the park/neutral position switch connector.

Temporarily install the control cable to the control shaft lever with the nut and secure the cable with the clip to the bracket, ensuring it is inserted securely.

Remove the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnect the control cable from the lever, and then remove the clip to disconnect the control cable from the bracket.

Install a new clip and connect the control cable to the bracket, ensuring secure insertion.

After installing the control shaft lever, washer, and nut, connect the switch connector.

Disconnect the connector, pry off the lock washer, and remove the nut, bolt, and switch.

13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.).

Install a new lock plate and nut, torquing it to 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.) and bend the claws on the lock plate to secure the nut.

Disconnect the oil cooler pipe.

The bolt should be torqued to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.).

Connect the oil cooler pipe, torquing it to 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.), and reinstall the 3 oil cooler pipe clamps.

Disconnect the connector, pry off the lock washer, remove the nut, followed by the bolt and the switch itself.

Reconnect the connector and verify that the engine starts only when the shift lever is in the N or P position; if not, perform the adjustment procedure.

Remove the elbow and O-ring.
