2007 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a crankshaft seal on 2007 Toyota Corolla?
A: Service and repairs on crankshaft main bearing seals must start with manual transaxle assembly or automatic transaxle assembly removal. Manual transaxle owners must remove the clutch cover assembly then the clutch disc assembly and the flywheel sub-assembly using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (multiple numbers) to stabilize the crankshaft before unfastening the 8 bolts and the flywheel. The automatic transaxle requires the removal of drive plate and ring gear assembly using the same procedure as manual transaxle. Start by cutting the oil seal lip before prying out the engine rear oil seal with a tape-wrapped screwdriver which requires checking the crankshaft for damage followed by smoothing any rough surfaces with 400-grit sandpaper. Installation requires multi-purpose grease on the lip of a new oil seal followed by using Special Service Tool: 09223-15020, 09950-70010 (09951-07100) with a hammer to tap the new oil seal until it reaches the rear oil seal retainer edge while maintaining the lip free of foreign material. Use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to hold the crankshaft while cleaning all eight bolts and bolt holes. Then add Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324 (Three Bond 1324 or equivalent) to 2 or 3 threads of the bolts before applying uniform torque of 88 Nm (897 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs.). The installation of the 8 bolts on the flywheel sub-assembly requires first applying Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324 or equivalent to two or three bolt threads before torqueing them to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). After torquing the bolts to the correct specifications, paint marks should be applied to each bolt for subsequent adjustments. Use Special Service Tool: 09301-00210 to install the clutch disc assembly after which you can install the clutch cover assembly before reinstating the manual or automatic transaxle assembly.
