2007 Toyota Camry Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable on 2007 Toyota Camry?
A: The service process of the transmission control cable starts by disconnecting it from the negative terminal of the battery. You need to take off the instrument cluster finish panel garnishes for position No. 1 and No. 2 together with the shift lever knob subassembly and upper console panel and upper console rear panel subassembly. You must remove two clips and disconnect the cable end to pull out the control cable assembly locks before turning the adjust nut by 180 degrees clockwise with pressure from your hand to split apart the entire assembly. The next step involves taking out the instrument panel safety pad subassembly, air conditioner unit assembly and center Air Bag sensor assembly, No. 1 engine cover subassembly, air cleaner inlet assembly, air cleaner cap subassembly, air cleaner case subassembly and the battery. The removal process requires disassembly of the transmission control cable assembly through removing 2 clips and 2 washers to separate 2 cables from the transaxle and removing the 2 clips from the control cable bracket before extracting the 2 bolts with the control cable assembly. The technician must also remove the No. 2 shift cable grommet retainer attached to the control cable assembly. The installation process begins with transmission control cable assembly placement then the attachment of the No. 2 shift cable grommet retainer followed by passing the control cable assembly through the floor hole until secure with 2 bolts tightened to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.). Apply the ends of both cables before inserting 2 washers then 2 clips before adding 2 separate clips to the control cable bracket. Check that the control cable outer faces upward when attached to the shift lever retainer before inspecting the cable outer lock's proper projection. Connect the shift cable end to the shift lever assembly with a clip while the select cable end needs a new clip installation with its serrated section aimed toward the upper direction. Safely install the sequence of center Air Bag sensor assembly, air conditioner unit assembly, instrument panel safety pad subassembly, upper console rear panel subassembly, upper console panel, No. 2 instrument cluster finish panel garnish, No. 1 instrument cluster finish panel garnish, and shift lever knob subassembly. Complete the reinstatement of the battery while also installing the air cleaner case subassembly followed by the air cleaner cap subassembly and air cleaner inlet assembly and finally No. 1 engine cover subassembly and reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal.
