2007 Toyota 4Runner Wheel Hub Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the front Wheel Hub on 2007 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The repair process for front axle hubs begins by removing the front wheel and separating the front speed sensor with a hexagon wrench then removing the 2 clamps and bolt before detaching the speed sensor wire harness from the steering knuckle. Obtain the front disc brake caliper assembly by first unattaching the bolt securing the brake tube bracket to the steering knuckle while using Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to disconnect the brake tube from the caliper assembly before removing its 2 bolts. Start by removing the front disc then dissolve the front stabilizer link assembly when you detach the nut while keeping the stud steady with a hexagon (6 mm) wrench because the ball joint may rotate. The tie rod end sub-assembly separation process requires users to first remove the cotter pin and nut through the assistance of Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. Detach the steering knuckle via Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to eliminate the front suspension upper arm assembly nut combined with the clip removal. Together with it, unfasten the two front suspension arm sub-assembly lower bolts. A front drive shaft hub separation with a plastic hammer is required for 4WD systems prior to removing the hub sub-assembly. The knuckle grease retainer cap inner is removed by using a screwdriver and hammer while Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 throughout the procedure with a hammer aids in unstaking the front wheel adjusting nut which is finally separated using Special Service Tool: 09318-12010. To proceed with front axle hub removal start by unscrewing the 4 bolts which secure the steering knuckle to the axle hub along with removing the axle hub itself from the knuckle. The O-ring attached to the axle hub must be removed after freeing the hub. The front axle hub soft requires placement in a vise after which Special Service Tool: 09710-30021 (09710-03051), 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04061, 09957-04010, 09958-04011) will be required to remove the bearing and a screwdriver used to separate the front axle hub spacer. To assemble the front axle hub utilize Special Service Tool: 09649-17010 to press in a new bearing and then use a new front axle hub spacer with the assistance of a hammer and brass bar before taking care to avoid spacer damage. Secure the dust cover together with the axle hub to the steering knuckle with 4 bolts that need to be torqued at 80 Nm (816 kgf/cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Install the new O-ring with MP grease on the axle hub before installation. The process begins with mounting a new adjusting nut through Special Service Tool: 09318-12010 while using a torque of 275 Nm (2,804 kgf/cm, 203 ft. lbs.). Following that, install a new knuckle grease retainer cap inner with a brass bar and hammer to prevent damage from occurring. To install the components you should first attach both front axle hub assembly and front suspension upper arm assembly using a new nut that requires 110 Nm (1,122 kgf/cm) torque and securing with a new cotter pin. The front suspension arm sub-assembly lower receives two bolts which need a torque of 160 Nm (1,630 kgf/cm, 118 ft. lbs.) before installation of the tie rod end sub-assembly with nut and new cotter pin. A nut should be attached to connect the front stabilizer link assembly to the steering knuckle before torquing it to 70 Nm (714 kgf/cm, 52 ft. lbs.). A hexagon (6 mm) wrench should be used to hold the stud if the ball joint moves with the nut. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to connect the brake tube to the disc brake caliper assembly then torques both components to 15 Nm (155 kgf/cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Attachment of the steering knuckle speed sensor wire harness occurs by bolting it in place and torqueing to 13 Nm (133 kgf/cm, 10 in. lbs.). After that, install 2 clips and secure the speed sensor with a bolt tightened to 8.3 Nm (85 kgf/cm, 73 in. lbs.). The last steps include bleeding the brake line followed by checking the reservoir fluid level and brake fluid leakage prevention before installing the front wheel and torquing it to 112 Nm (1,142 kgf/cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Front wheel alignment checks and ABS speed sensor signal tests are also required.
