2007 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Chain on 2007 Scion tC?
A: Service and repair of timing chains should begin with connecting the battery cable to the negative terminal but waiting a minimum of 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag deployment. Apart from the front wheel RH and engine under covers RH and LH the service requires removal of the hood sub-assembly along with the front fender apron seal RH and No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly through the removal of 2 nuts. Drain the engine coolant before proceeding to remove the front exhaust pipe assembly and all listed components including fan and generator V belt, generator assembly, vane pump assembly and engine mounting insulator RH by following the specified steps maintaining connection of 2 oil reservoir hoses during every stage. Remove the ignition coil assembly, together with the cylinder head cover sub-assembly while disconnecting all ventilation hoses and engine wire clamps when required. A transmission jack should lift the engine for the removal of V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly, crankshaft position sensor and oil pan sub-assembly while using Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 to cut off the applied sealer. Set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC through compression state by positioning the crankshaft pulley mark "0" against the groove then inspect the camshaft timing gears. The crankshaft pulley removal requires three special service tools including 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 and 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). The service technician should separate the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly followed by the timing chain cover sub-assembly then the No. 1 crankshaft position sensor plate and timing chain guide, chain tensioner slipper and chain sub-assembly with final removal of the No. 1 chain vibration damper and crankshaft timing sprocket. Correctly position the crankshaft at 90 degrees counterclockwise to lock the oil pump drive shaft gear before removing the required parts for the No. 2 chain sub-assembly. Vernier calipers check the specified measurements between the No. 1 chain tensioner, chain sub-assembly, chain tensioner slipper, No. 1 chain vibration damper, crankshaft timing sprocket, oil pump drive gear and oil pump drive shaft gear. To replace the timing chain cover oil seal you should utilize a screwdriver and hammer to remove the current seal before installing a new one with Special Service Tool: 09223-22010 while maintaining its lip clean from debris and flat along the timing gear case border.
