2007 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH on 2007 Scion tC?
A: The first step for PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH servicing and repair requires cutting the negative cable connections to the battery terminal while waiting 90 seconds to stop Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. The first step of this repair involves removing the LH engine under cover followed by disconnecting the transmission control cable assembly through nut removal from the control shaft lever and then disconnecting the cable from the lever and removing the clip from the control cable bracket. Start by disconnecting the switch connector and then remove the nut with washer and control shaft lever and pry up the lock plate to take off the nut and plate before pulling out the position switch. The park/neutral position switch assembly needs a resistance check against specified values. Start the engine adjustment procedure by engaging the parking brake followed by setting the ignition switch to ON position while moving the brake pedal until the engine operates correctly in N and P modes or detects the correct operation of Back Up light and reverse warning buzzer at R position. To properly adjust the switch loosen its 2 bolts while placing the shift lever in N position which aligns the groove on the neutral basic line then maintain its position before fastening the bolts at a torque setting of 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Recheck the inspection after finishing adjustment. In order to install the park/neutral position switch assembly attach it to the manual valve shaft then provisionally install the two bolts place a new lock plate and secure the nut with a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). First install the control shaft lever temporarily before turning it counterclockwise until it stops and clockwise for 2 notches before removing the lever to align the groove with the neutral basic line while holding the switch in position and tightening the 2 bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Screw the lock plate onto the nut using a screwdriver before putting the control shaft lever with its washer and nut which should be tightened to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) and connecting the switch connector. The transmission control cable assembly requires attachment of the control cable to the control cable bracket which is then connected to the control shaft lever during temporary installation. Install the engine under cover LH then perform shift lever position adjustments followed by shift lever position inspection and check the park/neutral position switch assembly. After securing the cable to the negative battery terminal applicants should conduct an initialization procedure which may need specific system initialization upon cable disconnection and reconnection from the negative terminal.
