2007 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on 2007 Scion tC?
A: The first step for vacuum brake booster service and repair is to drain the brake fluid while immediately cleaning painted surfaces affected by spills. Begin the service by removing the front wiper arm head cap followed by windshield wiper arm and blades from both left and right sides. Also remove the hood to cowl top seal, cowl top ventilator louver LH, and windshield wiper motor with link. Next separate the outer cowl top panel sub-assembly, the No. 1 cowl water extract hose, and lower cowl body mounting bracket LH. Start the disassembly by taking away the air cleaner cap sub-assembly together with the brake master cylinder subassembly and disconnecting the brake master cylinder push rod clevis. The removal process of the front wheel LH and the No. 5 front brake tube requires Special Service Tool: 09023-00101. Use the clamps to take out all remaining brake tubes from their positions before taking off the clamps too. To extract the brake booster assembly first untighten the clevis lock nut then release the vacuum hose before removing the four nuts securing the brake booster assembly. The removal process continues with separate removal of the check valve and grommet. The installation procedure requires a new gasket then proper assembly of the brake booster with grommet and check valve while securing four nuts at 12.7 Nm torque (130 kgf-cm or 9 ft. lbs.). After connecting the vacuum hose with the clamp you should install the brake pedal push rod clevis with lock nut before adjusting pedal height followed by clevis torquing. The technician should install Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to tighten the No. 5 front brake tube clamps after proper grommet installation to a torque of 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) without the tool and 14 Nm (143 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) with it. Finally install the front wheel LH and torque it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.), then reinstall the brake master cylinder subassembly followed by the air cleaner cap sub-assembly and finally the lower cowl body mounting bracket LH. The brake master cylinder push rod clevis must receive its attachment while the mechanic must install the No. 1 cowl water extract hose as well as the outer cowl top panel subassembly. Brake fluid should be added to the reservoir then bleed air from the master cylinder and brake line followed by height and free-play adjustments on the brake pedal and checking fluid level and reserve distance and brake fluid leaks. The windshield wiper motor and link should be installed first before placing the cowl top ventilator louver LH and hood to cowl top seal followed by windshield wiper arm and blade assemblies both LH and RH and completing the installation by installing the front wiper arm head cap. A final check of the brake booster assembly should be performed.
