2006 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you service and repair the front shock absorber with coil spring on 2006 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Service and repair of the front shock absorber with coil spring requires first you to disconnect the negative battery cable and then remove the wheel followed by separating skid control wires and front flexible hoses. Reverse sequence procedures start with unstabilizing the front suspension upper arm and front shock absorber with coil spring through a process of bolt and nut and washer removal and then upper side nut detachment. Disassembly calls for the use of Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00031), 09727-00060 to compress the coil spring with the precaution not to employ an impact wrench as it could result in damaging it. You need to grasp the shock absorber rod first before removing the nut and successively eliminate the front shock absorber cushion retainer followed by the front shock absorber cushion No. 1 then front suspension support sub-assembly before front coil spring insulator upper and the front coil spring. Check the shock absorber assembly condition through rod compression-extension cycles to examine abnormal sounds or resistance and replace if needed. During reassembly install the front coil spring first using the special service tool until the bottom section enters the spring lower seat before adding the front shock absorber cushion retainer and front coil spring insulator upper followed by the front suspension support sub-assembly and front shock absorber cushion no. 1 and finally the front shock absorber cushion retainer will be installed. Installation requires alignment of the suspension support and absorber bush followed by fitting a new lock nut and completing the installation to a torque of 27 Nm (275 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.). Always avoid using an impact wrench to prevent damage. Tighten the front shock absorber with coil spring through installation where the lower coil spring end points out from the LH side but inside the RH side while securing the upper three nuts to 64 Nm torque and tightening the bolt and washer and nut. The installation process begins with temporary front suspension upper arm tightening before adding the front flexible hose together with the skid control sensor wire and front wheel installation until reaching 113 Nm torque (1,152 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Fully stabilize the suspension first then tighten both the front shock absorber coil spring nut to 83 Nm (846 kgf-cm, 61 ft. lbs.) after bouncing the vehicle several times. Also tighten the front suspension upper arm to final torque. Reinstall the cable to the negative battery terminal after securing it with 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.) torque then perform checks and modifications on the front wheel alignment. Drilling a hole in the shaded area of the shock absorber requires setting the piston rod in a vise at an angle and using a shop rag to secure the drill to slow-release the gas content from inside.
