2005 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How do you overhaul the front shock absorber with coil spring (2WD) on 2005 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step to overhaul the front shock absorber with coil spring (2WD) is to disconnect the negative battery cable and then remove the front wheel. The skid control sensor wire and front flexible hose must be separated before using tool 09628-62011 to remove the front suspension upper arm assembly LH. The front shock absorber with coil spring removal process starts with bolt removal and then the front shock absorber detachable assembly can be isolated after discarding its washer and nut followed by the assembly of upper side nuts. A special tool featuring part numbers 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00031), 09727-00060 will enable you to remove the front support to front shock absorber nut by compressing the coil spring but impact wrenches must be prevented to prevent damage. For this procedure start by holding the shock absorber rod then discard the nut to continue with front shock absorber cushion retainer removal followed by front shock absorber cushion No.1 and front suspension support sub-assembly LH together with front coil spring insulator upper LH and front coil spring LH. Test the shock absorber assembly front LH to check for any abnormal resistance or unusual sounds when operating before replacing if necessary. The installation of the front coil spring LH requires Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00031), 09727-00060 for compression before fitting it onto the shock absorber front LH with lower end placement into the spring lower seat gap. The installation order requires front shock absorber cushion retainer followed by front coil spring insulator upper LH, front suspension support sub-assembly LH, front shock absorber cushion No.1 and finally front shock absorber cushion retainer. Secure the suspension support next to the absorber bush and install a wrench-tightened new lock nut to 27 Nm (275 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.) torque but avoid using an impact wrench. Fit the front shock absorber with coil spring once the suspension support position is validated by placing the spring's lower end towards the LH-side vehicle outer edge and RH-side inner edge while securing it with three upper-side nuts tightened to 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.) and the bolt and washer. First tighten the front suspension upper arm assembly LH before applying the front flexible hose and skid control sensor wire to install the front wheel which must be torqued to 113 Nm (1,152 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Stable the suspension with vehicle jacking before bouncing the vehicle several times, then fully apply torque of 83 Nm (846 kgf-cm, 61 ft. lbs.) to the front shock absorber with coil spring nut and the front suspension upper arm assembly LH. The last step includes connecting the cable to the negative terminal of the battery using 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm) torque while performing front wheel alignment inspections.
