2006 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: Perform an initial inspection of the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH by activating the parking brake and turning the ignition switch to ON but pushing the brake pedal only to start the engine in N or P positions with the Back Up light functioning in R and not other positions and reverse warning buzzer working only in R. The negative terminal cable needs disconnection followed by a minimum 90-second delay to avoid Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. Then proceed to extract the battery by untightening the nut to remove the bolt and battery clamp and pull the battery and battery tray while also conducting the battery carrier (4 bolts) removal and battery bracket reinforcement (2 bolts). Disassembly of PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY requires removing the switch connector while detaching the nut and cable from the control shaft lever followed by nut removal and control assembly removal before detachment of the lock plate using a screwdriver for personnel exposure to switch retrieval. Test the switch through resistance measurement proceedings while placing the shift lever across each available position. To adjust the switch position you need to loosen its 2 bolts while setting the lever to N, align the groove to the neutral basic line, hold the switch in place then tighten the bolts at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Recheck the inspection following adjustment completion. The installation requires you to fit the switch onto the manual valve shaft before installing temporary bolts then adding a new lock washer and final tightening of the manual valve shaft nut to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). Turn the control shaft lever counterclockwise until it reaches its stop point and proceed clockwise by two notches. Remove the lever before aligning the groove to the neutral basic line where you should hold the switch steady to tighten both bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). First stake the nut with its lock washer and install the control shaft lever with these components to 13 Nm (113 kgf-cm, 10 ft. lbs.) then attach the shift control cable to the lever with 15 Nm (153 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) while hooking up the switch connector. Install the battery through securing the battery bracket reinforcement with tightened bolts at 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) along with the battery carrier having 4 bolts tightened at 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) and the battery tray before securing the battery with the battery clamp and tightening the bolt to 8.5 Nm (87 kgf-cm, 75 inch lbs.) and the nut to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.). After reconnecting the cable at the negative terminal you should check the shift position while inspecting the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY.
