2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair a Neutral Safety Switch on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: The service process for PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH requires one to unplug the park/neutral position switch connector first. The first step is to disconnect the switch connector yet continue with removing the switch by loosening the nut followed by removing the nut, washer and control shift lever. The first step involves using a screwdriver to detach the lock plate then you should remove the nut and lock plate until you can extract the two bolts that will release the park/neutral position switch. The park/neutral position switch installation requires 2 bolt attachments with torques set at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) before installing a new lock plate and nut torqued at 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). Finally, fix the lock plate with bent claws on its plate. The control shift lever installation requires torques of 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs. on the nut while the control cable needs 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs. when connecting to the control shaft. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector before checking that the vehicle will start only when the shift lever is in N or P positions. If the condition does not work as intended proceed with the adjustment steps. Perform a test drive of the vehicle as the last step.
