2004 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair a Neutral Safety Switch on 2004 Toyota RAV4?
A: Begin service and repair procedures on the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH by disconnecting its connector. Start by removing the park/neutral position switch nut before proceeding to unfasten the washer and control shift lever and the nut. The service process begins with disconnecting the switch connector followed by lock plate removal using a screwdriver and subsequent removal of the nut as well as the lock plate and 2 bolt removal steps to expose the park/neutral position switch. Place the park/neutral position switch into position first by bolting it through its two points which need 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) torque then install the lock plate and nut with torque at 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.) before bending the lock plate claws to fix the nut. Install the control shift lever using a nut which requires torquing to 12.7 Nm while connecting the control cable to the control shaft secured with 15 Nm torque. Verify by checking the park/neutral position operation that the engine requires the N or P position shift lever to start and perform the adjustment steps if the test fails. A final step should include driving the vehicle for testing purposes.
