2003 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Neutral Safety Switch on 2003 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first step for servicing the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor requires users to disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector. Start by removing the nut from the park/neutral position switch then proceed with the slotting out of nut, washer and control shift lever. You can start repairs of the park/neutral position switch by prying off its lock plate using a screwdriver while also removing the nut from the lock plate and its respective parts in the next step. The final step involves detaching the two bolts to extract the park/neutral position switch. To install and adjust the device mount the park/neutral position switch with the 2 bolts at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Begin by mounting a new lock plate together with a nut which requires a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). Then fold the claws on the lock plate for nut retention. Threads the control shift lever with its nut while applying force of 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) then attaches the control cable to the control shaft with 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs. force). Inspect the park/neutral position operation by connecting the park/neutral position switch connector to check the engine starts only when the shift lever is in N or P position; then proceed with adjustment if the test fails. Carry out a vehicle test drive as the final step.
