2006 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the knock sensor on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: The knock sensor servicing requires users to drain coolant before proceeding with fuel system pressure discharging. Use at least 90 seconds of waiting time to disconnect the negative cable from the battery terminal to avoid activating the Air Bags and seat belt pretensioner systems. The service procedure requires removal of the No. 1 engine cover in addition to the air cleaner cap, throttle body, fuel delivery pipe and you must disconnect the fuel tube. To begin remove both heater water inlet hose by working on the hose clamp then disconnecting it from the heater radiator and cylinder head followed by the heater water outlet hose and its hose clamp at the heater radiator and water by-pass pipe. The intake manifold removal process begins with disconnecting the union to check valve hose from the brake booster and the camshaft timing oil control valve connector followed by the wire harness clamp removal then taking off the union to check valve hose from the vacuum hose clamp and removing the 5 bolts, 2 nuts and the intake manifold with its gasket. First detach the knock sensor by disconnecting the connector and then separate its intake manifold insulator from the cylinder block. Installation begins with a proper placement of the knock sensor that needs to be secured with a nut torqued to 20 N.m and 15 ft.lbf (205 kgf.cm) while connecting the sensor connector. After placing the intake manifold insulator on the cylinder block mount a new gasket into the intake manifold while using 5 bolts and 2 nuts tightened to 30 N.m (305 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf). Screw in the vacuum hose clamp where the union to check valve hose will go before connecting the camshaft timing oil control valve connector and the union to check valve hose to the brake booster. Affix the heater water outlet hose toward the water bypass pipe and heater radiator unit followed by affixing the heater water inlet hose at the cylinder head and heater radiator unit through the hose clamp installation. Add together the fuel tube with the fuel delivery pipe and the throttle body alongside the air cleaner cap before you reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal. Solutions finish with adding engine coolant while verifying fuel and engine coolant system leaks before installing the No. 1 engine cover.
