2006 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to overhaul the rear shock absorber with coil spring on 2006 Toyota Corolla?
A: The overhaul process of the rear shock absorber with coil spring starts with the removal of the rear wheel and spare wheel cover assembly together with the rear floor finish plate and luggage compartment trim cover inner LH. You must elevate the rear axle beam using a jack and remove its two nuts and bolt and the nut together with the washer and shock absorber. Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 should be used for compressing the coil spring on the shock absorber assembly rear LH. Use of an impact wrench must be avoided to protect this tool from damage. Use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the piston rod before removing the nut allowing you to extract the support plate together with the cushion followed by the spring bracket upper insulator suspension support and spring bumper and coil spring. The shock absorber assembly requires inspection through rod compression and extension to detect any resistance problems or suspicious noises; if issues exist then changing the unit is necessary. You must compress the coil spring once again while employing Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 before inserting the coil spring into the shock absorber and fitting the lower end into the spring lower seat's gap. Begin by installing the spring bumper along with suspension support and upper insulator to the spring bracket before placing the spring bracket correctly. Install the cushion and support plate before securing a new center nut temporarily. Remove the Special Service Tool: 09727-30021 then verify the spring bracket direction and use a 6 mm hexagon wrench to tighten the new nut with a torque of 56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.). Install the rear shock absorber and coil spring before tightening the nut and washer temporarily before finishing the installation by installing two nuts and bolt and tightening them to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). You should stabilize the suspension by putting the rear wheel on and lowering the vehicle while bouncing it several times up and down. Proceed to fully tighten the nut to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) after checking the rear wheel alignment.
