  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster assembly on 2006 Toyota Avalon?
A: The vacuum brake booster assembly service process begins by detaching front wiper components from both sides then moving to the right cowl top ventilator louver and windshield parts before removing 4 bolts, 2 nuts from the outer cowl top panel. You must remove brake fluid from the system before cleaning paint-stained areas with brush and water. Then detach the air cleaner assembly and brake master w/plate cylinder sub-assembly with Special Service Tool: 09023-00101. Use the same special service tool to detach the vacuum hose assembly clip while using the tool again to remove front brake tube No.5. The technician should detach the left front door scuff plate and left cowl side trim sub-assembly followed by the left instrument side panel and left instrument panel finish lower panel and lower air bag assembly. First remove the brake pedal return spring along with the push rod pin then take out 4 nuts from the brake booster assembly to disconnect it properly while protecting the brake tubes and wire harness. After replacing the brake booster gasket with a new one, install the brake booster with 4 fastening nuts that require a torque specification of 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). The master cylinder push rod clevis must be installed with its lock nut while performing brake pedal height adjustment before tight locking the nut. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to specified parts before installing the push rod pin and clip and then reinstalling the brake pedal return spring and other components in their respective order. Install front brake tube No.5 employing Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 and torque it to 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) while installing the vacuum hose assembly with its clip. The technician should utilize Special Service Tools 09023-00101 09737-00020 to adjust the brake booster push rod before reinstalling the brake master w/plate cylinder sub-assembly and filling the reservoir with brake fluid and bleeding the master cylinder and brake line followed by air cleaner assembly reinstallation. To finish the brake system work, inspect the brake fluid level then check for fluid leaks before putting back the outer cowl top panel with its 4 bolt and single nut setup and tightening the nut to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.). Afterward install the windshield wiper motor and link assembly and finally put on the front wiper arm and blade assemblies on both sides. Finish the work by inspecting and adjusting brake pedal height.
