2006 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear axle shaft assembly on 2006 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step to replace the rear axle shaft assembly requires the removal of rear wheel followed by speed sensor rear LH then separate the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH. The order continues with the removal sequence of rear disc, parking brake shoe return tension spring, parking brake shoe strut compression spring, parking brake shoe strut LH and parking brake shoe. The removal process starts by taking off four nuts along with an O-ring from the rear axle shaft with its backing plate. The removal of rear axle shaft LH oil seal requires Special Service Tool: 09308-00010 for progression before using a snap ring expander to extract the rear axle shaft snap ring. The driver should use Special Service Tool: 09521-25011 with a press to dismantle the rear axle shaft LH followed by removing the rear axle bearing retainer inner LH and rear axle shaft plate washer. Install four nuts to the parking brake plate to rear axle housing bolts while using a hammer before discarding the former nuts. You must take out the six hub bolts of the rear axle hub & bearing assembly LH while using Special Service Tool: 09650-17011 to remove the rear axle LH hub bolt. Detach the brake drum oil LH deflector along with its gasket before grinding the rear axle bearing inner race and chiseling out the rear axle bearing oil seal. Inspect the rear axle shaft for maximum runout until the replacement is required due to damage or when runout reaches 1.5 mm (0.0591 inch) shaft or 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) flange values. Place the new deflector components on the axle shaft followed by threading the axle hub bolts in place then apply the hub bolt and adjust the hub nut. Lay the backing plate onto the rear axle bearing assembly LH before installing its four housing bolts through the use of a press equipped with two socket wrenches. The working order requires installing the rear axle shaft plate washer, the new rear axle bearing retainer inner LH followed by the rear axle shaft LH installation that must be performed by using Special Service Tool: 09521-25011 with a press. New rear axle shaft snap rings need to be installed with a snap ring expander followed by a new oil seal on the axle shaft using Special Service Tool: 09950-60020 (09951-00770), 09950-70010 (09951-07150) together with a hammer for assistance. Use a new O-ring and install the rear axle shaft and backing plate with the four nuts while torquing them to 123 Nm (1,254 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.). Placing the parking brake shoe turning toward the back shelf strut-cushion-part and parking brake shoe return tension spring, then rear disc brake caliper assembly LH and finishing with rear disc. The procedure requires reinstitution of the speed sensor rear LH followed by brake fluid filling into the reservoir and master cylinder bleeding along with brake line bleeding. Investigation of brake fluid reservoir level and brake fluid leak tests must be done before reinstallation of the rear wheel with torque specified to 112 Nm (1,142 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). As the final step end the inspection by verifying the parking brake lever travel position and testing the ABS speed sensor signal.
