2006 Scion xA Neutral Safety Switch Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the park/neutral safety switch on 2006 Scion xA?
A: Initiating the park/neutral position switch service or repair process requires checking three vehicle conditions including enabling the parking brake followed by turning the ignition switch on and depressing the brake pedal to ensure engine operation only in n or p positions and verifying back up light and reverse warning buzzer functions in r but not other positions. The park/neutral position switch assembly requires removal through connector disconnection and removal of the nut followed by washer and control shaft lever. The switch can be extracted when the manual valve shaft nut and two bolts are removed and the lock washer is pried free. Check the switch assembly through resistance measurements in each position; if values fall outside specifications then get a new switch assembly. To adjust the switch, locate its two bolts then move the shift lever to n position and match the groove with the neutral basic line before tightening the bolts at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Reinstallation of the park/neutral position switch assembly requires fitting it to the manual valve shaft followed by two bolt mounting then a new lock washer addition before manual valve shaft nut tightening reaches 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). First place the control shaft lever temporarily then turn it counterclockwise until it stops before turning clockwise two notches. Remove the lever and align the groove with the neutral basic line while holding the switch to tighten the bolts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Attach the screwdriver staked lock washer to the nut before installing the control shaft lever with its washer and nut to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque while connecting the connector to the park/neutral position switch. The installation process for transmission control cable assembly includes attaching the control cable to the control shaft lever through the nut and installing it to the bracket using a new clip before reinstalling the battery. The worker should perform a position check of the shift lever before completing a final inspection of the park/neutral position switch assembly.
