2005 Toyota Solara Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2005 Toyota Solara?
A: Maintenance on the power steering pump begins with removing the front right wheel together with power steering fluid draining and front fender apron seal RH removal. The service technician needs to remove the fan and generator V belt using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 before disconnecting the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 by removing its clip to prevent V belt spillage. Holding the pressure port union with a 27 mm wrench enables users to remove the union bolt while also taking off its gasket. The vane pump assembly requires removal after disconnecting the oil pressure switch connector while using a 14 mm deep socket wrench (do not remove bolt A) with Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to loosen bolt A and then taking off bolt B. Before removal, fix the vane pump assembly in a vise with Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132). Next, remove the flow control valve along with its components including the O-ring and compression spring. The O-ring installed on the power steering oil pressure switch needs replacement unless the switch appears undamaged. Start by taking off four bolts and the O-ring from the vane pump housing rear to enable removal of the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly with two screwdrivers on the snap ring. Begin by taking out the vane pump rotor and cam ring and afterward separate the front side plate as well as its O-rings. Pull out the housing oil seal with great care to prevent damage to the housing front. The inspection of the vane pump shaft along with its bush in the housing front must confirm oil clearance below 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Check the vane pump plate dimension and identify a length range from 1.405 to 1.411 mm (0.05531 to 0.05555 inch) along with measuring the vane pump rotor groove to plate gap which should not exceed 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch). Check the operation of the flow control valve and evaluate its leakage during inspections while verifying that the compression spring should keep a free length of at least 36.9 mm (1.453 inch). Replacement of the vane pump assembly is required if the pressure port union becomes damaged. Put in a new housing oil seal to the precise direction using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press with power steering fluid applied. Apply power steering fluid onto the housing front bushing area after which insert the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly through gradual motion while protecting the oil seal lip from damage. Place the front side plate on the housing after installing new O-rings treated with power steering fluid while maintaining correct positioning and mounting the cam ring with its inscription oriented upwards. Add the vane pump rotor to its place and apply power steering fluid coating to all 10 vane pump plates which must face the round end outwards. The w/pulley shaft sub-assembly gets its new snap ring installed and users apply power steering fluid to a fresh O-ring which then gets positioned onto the housing rear before tightening it with four bolts to a torque of 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Verify pump preload by checking that gear motion occurs without noises and measure pulley rotating torque that must be below 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 ft. lbs.) through temporary service bolt usage (10 mm diameter, 1.25 mm pitch, 50 mm length). Secure the power steering oil pressure switch with new O-ring application of fluid before bolting it into position at 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Liquidate every component within the flow control valve assembly along with its compression spring unit before applying power steering fluid to a fresh O-ring then install the pressure port union through 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) torque. Place the power steering suction port union fitted with its new O-ring at 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) then bolt A needs temporary mounting before bolt B installation up to 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) and subsequent bolt A tightening to 26 Nm (264 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.) using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 and a 14 mm deep socket wrench. Attach the pressure feed tube assembly with a new gasket so the stopper touches the housing front surface while torquing the union bolt to 52 Nm (525 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Install the front fender apron seal RH and the front wheel RH at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Then reinstall the fan and generator V belt using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 before reconnecting pump hose No.1 to the oil reservoir while avoiding V belt fluid contamination. The process of bleeding power steering fluid should be completed along with a leak inspection.
