2004 Toyota Solara Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2004 Toyota Solara?
A: Start power steering pump servicing and repairing work by first removing the right-hand front wheel and draining out the power steering fluid. The service process starts with the removal of front fender apron seal RH and fan and generator V belt using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010. Disconnect the oil reservoir to pump hose No.1 by first removing the clip while checking to avoid V belt fluid leakage and second disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly at the pressure port union using a 27 mm wrench to remove the bolt and gasket. You should extract the vane pump assembly starting with the oil pressure switch connector disconnection followed by loosening bolt A using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 and a 14 mm deep socket wrench (not removing bolt A) and then removing bolt B as well as the vane pump assembly. Affix the vane pump assembly to a vise using Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00132). Then remove the flow control valve after taking out its pressure port union and O-ring and then extracting the valve and compression spring. The operation to remove the power steering oil pressure switch requires the removal of its O-ring while you should replace it if it shows damage. To access the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly the user must first remove the 4 bolts together with the O-ring from the vane pump housing rear component. Then use two screwdrivers to remove the snap ring before extracting the sub-assembly. First remove the vane pump rotor and its 10 plates then continue by taking out the vane pump cam ring along with its side plate front while carefully collecting O-rings from both parts and housing front. Take extra caution when taking out the housing oil seal because damage to the housing front could occur. Measuring the oil clearance between the vane pump shaft and bush in the housing front should not exceed 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch), while checking the thickness and clearance of the vane pump rotor and plates requires replacement of the assembly when necessary. Assess the flow control valve for normal operation before inspecting its leakage points, measure the compression spring's free length because shortest measurement rates require assembly replacement under 36.9 mm (1.453 inch). A replacement of the pressure port union should be performed if you detect any damage. Determine the installation direction using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00280), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press to install a new housing oil seal that has been coated in power steering fluid. Put power steering fluid on the front bushing surface of the housing before slowly inserting the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly with attention to not damage the oil seal lip. After installing the vane pump side plate front with correct direction alignment and the cam ring should face outward before adding vane pump rotor plates facing their round ends outward. First install a new snap ring to the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly before installing the vane pump housing rear with a new O-ring by aligning the straight pin and tightening four bolts to 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Check the preload by making sure the pump rotates smoothly without noise and install a service bolt with specifications at 10 mm diameter and 1.25 mm pitch and 50 mm length to verify the pulley rotating torque should be below 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 ft. lbs.). Following power steering fluid application to the O-ring, install the power steering oil pressure switch, tighten it to 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.), then proceed with installing the flow control valve along with the compression spring by applying fluid to both components before installing a new O-ring on the pressure port union which should be tightened to 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). Insert the power steering suction port union bolt with new O-ring then proceed to install the vane pump assembly by using Special Service Tool 09249-63010 with a 14 mm deep socket wrench to tighten bolt A first then bolt B to 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) before torquing bolt A to 26 Nm (264 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.). A new gasket should be placed on the pressure feed tube assembly before sealing it by tightening the union bolt to 52 Nm (525 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.) while ensuring the stopper rests against the housing front. Follow the installation steps using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 to attach the pump hose No.1 to the oil reservoir while avoiding V belt fluid spillage. Then install the fan and generator V belt before tightening the front fender apron seal RH and front wheel RH nuts to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). The final part of the process includes bleeding the power steering fluid while conducting a leak check.
