2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first task in servicing and repairing the Brake Master Cylinder includes disconnecting the level warning switch connector then drawing out fluid with a syringe before taking care to prevent brake fluid from touching painted surfaces. The 4 brake lines and master cylinder 3-way should be disconnected from models without ABS or VSC using Special Service Tool 09023-00101 while maintaining 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque. Start by eliminating the front LH brake line by doing away with the clamp while using the same special tool together with a spanner to accomplish a torque level of 15 Nm. Models featuring both ABS and VSC require disconnection of their two master cylinder brake lines by using the mentioned tool at the specified torque. Manually-transmitted vehicles require release of the clutch reservoir hose before continuing with the operation. You should remove the master cylinder through these steps: first take out the 2 nuts then pull it out before adjusting the torque to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) while discarding the gasket that needs replacement with a new one after installation. First unscrew the reservoir set screw at 1.8 Nm and then disassemble the 2 grommets before placing the cylinder into a vise for servicing. Push the pistons into their positions using a screwdriver and a torque of 10 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.). The removal of the piston stopper bolt allows extraction of the 2 pistons and springs and careful straight extraction process to prevent cylinder bore damage. The cylinder bore should undergo inspection to evaluate rust or scoring while checking for wear or damage at the same time. Any necessary cleaning or replacement procedures must be performed. Install all components in reverse order while lubricating the specified rubber pieces with lithium soap base glycol grease prior to installation using the reverse sequence of disassembly. Install the brake push rod according to length specification before filling the reservoir with fluid followed by brake system bleeding and leak inspection and a brake pedal adjustment. Users must bleed the clutch system after repair of manual transmission vehicles.
