2004 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2004 Toyota RAV4?
A: Service and repair of the Brake Master Cylinder starts with disconnecting the level warning switch connector while you draw fluid with a syringe and wiping away any brake fluid that touches painted surfaces. Models without ABS and VSC require users to disconnect the 4 brake lines from the master cylinder and 3-way using Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 at a torque setting of 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Start the front LH brake line removal process by dismantling the clamp before using the same special tool and spanner to tighten it to a torque of 15 Nm. Connect the spanner-like tool from Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to both brake lines for models with ABS and VSC before torquing the connections to 15 Nm. A clutch reservoir hose requires removal when disconnecting it from manual transmission cars. The master cylinder removal entails looping out the 2 nuts then distinctly pulling it out while applying torque at 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) before eliminating the gasket to insert a new one for installation. Remove the reservoir after loosening its set screw then apply 1.8 Nm (18 kgf-cm, 16 in. lbs.) torque while taking out the cap along with the strainer. Place the cylinder in a vise before using a screwdriver to push the pistons in on their stopper bolt. You should measure the torque at 10 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.). Use snap ring pliers to remove snap rings from pistons and springs but extract the number one piston straight out away from the cylinder bore to dodge bore damage. Lightly strike the cylinder flange against wooden blocks while dropping the piston and maintain at least 100 mm (3.94 in.) distance from the rag to the top edges around the blocks. The cylinder bore needs an inspection for both rust and scoring followed by wear and damage checks with necessary cleaning or part replacement. Lithium soap base glycol grease needs to be applied to identified rubber parts during the reassembly process before the installation occurs according to the same sequence as the disassembly steps. Before fitting the brake booster push rod users need to measure it then fill the reservoir with fluid followed by bleeding the entire system and leak checks with brake pedal adjustments. Bleed the clutch system with manual transmission vehicles after you finish installing their components.
