2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear Brake Pad Set on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first step to replace rear brake pads requires removal of the rear wheel followed by temporary fastening of the disc through hub nuts. Check pad lining thickness through the pad protector inspection hole using a measurement tool and confirm its thickness meets at least 1.0 mm (0.039 in.); otherwise change pads. Remove the pad protector along with the two pad guide pins by taking care to avoid distortions that can harm the clip and protector so both components can be reused when in good condition. You should use a screwdriver to remove the protector and proceed by taking out the clip and guide pins. Turn your attention to each pad by removing its related anti-rattle spring and two pads and anti-squeal shims. Before installing new pads conduct a check for disc thickness and runout while replacing anti-squeal shims with each set of pads. The inside surface of each anti-squeal shim requires application of disc brake grease followed by assembly of a pad with both items. The brake fluid reservoir must lose a small amount for this procedure. The piston insertion process requires either a monkey wrench handle similar to another tool that will also work for this purpose. You might need to open the bleeder plug when pressurizing the piston with this tool. Install the inner pad first by placing its wear indicator plate at the bottom while positioning the outer pad below it with attention to prevent oil or grease contact with friction surfaces. You must now reinstall the anti-rattle spring together with the two pad guide pins and the clip followed by the pad protector. To complete the replacement secure the rear wheel while applying 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque. Then press the brake pedal repeatedly after which check the fluid height reaches the maximum line in the sight glass.
