2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What is the procedure to service and repair the Parking Brake Shoe on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: Before servicing or repairing the parking brake start by unwiring the rear wheel with a torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). First remove the rear disc brake assembly through the process of unfastening two installation bolts while keeping the flexible hose in place without stretching it. Pull the parking brake lever until you can remove the disc; you can make adjustment with the shoe until the wheel becomes freely movable. The 2 shoe return springs should be removed by using Special Service Tool: 09717-20010 while Special Service Tool: 09718-20010 should be used for shoe installation. Install the shoe strut after fitting the compression spring and maintain the forward orientation of the spring toward the front of the assembly. Start by sliding out the front shoe then remove the shoe adjuster before unfastening the tension spring to take away both the front shoe with its accompanying 2 cups and shoe hold-down spring and pin. You can access the rear shoe by sliding it out and disconnecting the parking brake cable from its shoe lever to remove all 2 caps and shoe hold-down spring as well as its pin. Check the quality of disassembled brake components for rust damage and wear using ruler measurements to detect brake shoe lining thickness which needs replacement when below 2.5 mm (0.098 in.) standard thickness or indicating severe wear. Users should operate a brake drum gauge to measure the disc's inside diameter which should be between 190.0 mm (7.480 in.) and 191.0 mm (7.520 in.). The gauge must be clean before use. Ruptured or unevenly worn parts must be replaced or properly ground. Check the contact of parking brake linings against the disc by applying chalk inside the disc then grinding the lining when necessary. A feeler gauge should measure the parking brake shoe-lever clearance which should be below 0.35 mm (0.0138 in.); if above specs replace the shim then recheck the measurement. Deassembly.Sequence becomes the reverse order with specified parts requiring high-temperature grease. First temporarily install hub nuts then remove the hole plug to adjust the parking brake shoe clearance through the adjuster until the disc locks before returning the adjuster 8 notches prior to reinstallation of the hole plug. The final step involves traveling the vehicle at 50 km/h (31 mph) on a level dry secure road while pulling the lever with 98 N (10 kgf, 19.8 lbs.) of force through the parking brake release button which you must press simultaneously two or three times before checking and adjusting the brake lever travel.
