2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The first step for repairing a power steering pump is to begin by taking off the reservoir cap followed by removing the reservoir using clamp loosening then extraction and finally removing the O-ring from the power steering vane pump housing. Service begins by disassembling the rear housing and oil strainer after removing its four bolts and the housing O-ring. Start by taking out the cam ring then rotate the vane pump rotor before removing the 10 vane plates while keeping them from accidental dropping and then the lower side plate. Apply snap ring pliers to extract the snap ring before performing spring seat removal through service bolt access to acquire the O-ring from the spring seat and taking out the flow control valve and spring together. A plastic-faced hammer should be used to tap out the upper side plate and wave washer before extracting the O-ring from the side plate. A micrometer must verify vane pump rotor and vane plates match the required measurements of 5.4 mm for height and 0.882 mm for thickness and 4.596 mm for length. If any measurement does not meet minimum specifications, parts need replacement based on inscribed marks during the check of vane plate clearance with a feeler gauge against vane pump rotor grooves. The technician evaluates the flow control valve by applying power steering fluid before checking its fluid movement into the valve hole through visual inspection and compressed air leakage testing. The technician replaces the valve when necessary according to the inscribed mark. Use a vernier caliper to measure the spring length which needs replacement when the measurement reaches 28.7 mm or lower. The replacement of the union seat requires a screw extractor to remove it followed by gently installing a new one. During reinstallation the technician should soak the specified parts in power steering fluid before positioning the flow control valve correctly with its spring seat plus the coating of the new O-ring for installation. Follow this order to install the lower side plate, cam ring, vane pump rotor and 10 vane plates by positioning all inscribed marks towards the top. After positioning the upper side plate with a freshly installed O-ring, users should place a wave washer and oil strainer and rear housing into position. They need to aim the O-ring toward the oil hole before securing the assembly with 4 bolts tightened to 8.5 Nm. You need to apply 7.0 Nm torque when installing the new reservoir with its fresh O-ring and replace the reservoir cap.
