    Q:
How to service and repair the power steering pump on Toyota MR2 Spyder? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service and repair of the power steering pump requires users to first remove the luggage compartment trim box cover and disconnect ECU connectors by removing the clip and a return hose. Service technicians must use Special Service Tool: 09021-12700 to disconnect the pressure feed tube before proceeding with power steering vane pump removal through the sequential removal of two bolts, a nut along with three washers. Install the power steering vane pump by first placing it correctly then fasten it with the 2 bolts, nut, and 3 washers at a torque setting of 19 Nm (190 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The pressure feed tube installation requires Special Service Tool: 09023-12700. When installing torque the tube to 39.5 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.) while using a torque wrench with a fullcrum length of 345 mm (11.81 inch). The process concludes with attaching the return hose through its clip then reattaching ECU connectors before bleeding power steering then finishing with luggage compartment trim box cover replacement.

    Q:
How to service and repair the power steering pump on Toyota MR2 Spyder? Posted by Customer
    A:
A power steering pump service requires you to start by removing the reservoir cap followed by the reservoir through clamp loosening and removal of the O-ring from the power steering vane pump housing. The process begins by disassembling the rear housing and oil strainer through the step of removing four bolts while also extracting the O-ring from the housing. One must carefully remove the cam ring and vane pump rotor and 10 vane plates while avoiding the vane plates to escape and continuing with the lower side plate removal. Use snap ring pliers to delete the snap ring from the flow control valve before pulling out the spring seat with a service bolt to take out the O-ring, flow control valve and spring. Remove the O-ring from the side plate after tapping it with a plastic-faced hammer together with the wave washer on the upper side plate. Use a micrometer to check the vane pump rotor height and the vane plate thickness and length and make sure they are at minimum 5.4 mm, 0.882 mm and 4.596 mm levels respectively. Then examine the vane pump rotor groove clearance against the vane plate before part replacement following inscribed mark indicators. To inspect the flow control valve you should apply power steering fluid on it and check its smooth movement into the valve hole for any signs of leakage using compressed air and perform a replacement if necessary depending on the inscribed mark. Vernier calipers should be used to measure the free spring length. Replace the spring if its length falls below 28.7mm. A screw extractor removes the union seat which you must apply gentle tapping strokes to install a new fitting. The selected parts must receive power steering fluid coating before installing flow control valve and spring seat with proper positioning while coating the new O-ring. Set the lower side plate properly alongside the cam ring vane pump rotor and 10 vane plates in their respective orientations. The assembly continues with placing the upper side plate after adding an O-ring and then adding the wave washer and an oil strainer and rear housing. The O-ring needs to be properly aligned with the oil hole before securing the 4 bolts at 8.5 Nm torque. The procedure ends with reservoir installation at 7.0 Nm torque level while using a new O-ring and then fitting the reservoir cap.
