2005 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2005 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Begin the axle shaft servicing and repair procedures by taking off the rear wheel using 131 Nm (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) torque. The brake line needs Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to disconnect it while applying 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque to remove the clip. After removing the brake caliper and its disc, disconnect the two bolts with their attached washers by applying torque of 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Use a dial indicator to measure bearing backlash because values beyond 0.6 mm (0.024 inch) will require replacement of the bearing. The outside surface of the axle shaft should receive a deviation check at the proximity of the bolt hole using a 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) limit. Replacing the axle shaft becomes necessary if the limit is exceeded. The axle shaft assembly removal procedure starts with removing the parking brake assembly and then proceeding with the four nuts at 123 Nm torque (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.) until the axle shaft assembly can be extracted while protecting the oil seal from damage. You should remove the O-ring from inside the bearing case. The correct installation steps involve reversing the removal process and afterward filling the brake reservoir with fluid and conducting brake bleed procedures and leak checkups and testing the ABS speed sensor signal.
