2005 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Overhaul a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2005 Toyota Highlander?
A: Starting the rack and pinion overhaul process requires inspection of the center front wheel together with separation of the front wheel. Use Service Tool: 09628-62011 to disconnect the tie rod assemblies from both left and right wheel sides. Start by securing the steering wheel with a seat belt and continuing with bolt A removal to displace the clamp from the steering column hole cover No.1 and finally remove the steering column hole covers. Disengage the steering intermediate shaft sub-assembly by first loosening bolt B and then marking both the sub-assembly and link assembly. Both front stabilizer link assemblies require disconnection using Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 to proceed with front stabilizer bracket removal along with the return and pressure feed tube assembly separation. Remove the power steering link assembly before unbolting the left and right turn pressure tubes through the use of Special Service Tool: 09023-38201. Secure the steering link assembly with Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 while you continue by removing both tie rod assemblies before unclipping and unclamping the rack and pinion boot on both sides without damaging the boot material. Begin by uninstalling the rack and pinion ends and guides with Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 followed by an uninstall of the power steering control valve through two steps: first remove the rack housing cap with a 27 mm socket wrench then maintain control of the control valve shaft with Special Service Tool: 09616-00011 while you uninstall the control valve nut. Delicate work starts with dust cover removal and subsequent removal of bolts along with control valve housing from the system so you can extract the control valve and its spacers. To extract the upper oil seal employ Special Service Tool: 09950-70010 (09951-07150), 09950-60010 (09951-00250). The repair requires removal of the cylinder end stopper alongside the power steering rack and power steering rack bush. Special Service Tool: 09527-21011, 09612-24014 (09613-22011) must be used to extract the oil seal. The power steering rack must receive comprehensive inspection for wear and runout conditions which will trigger a necessity for assembly replacement. To complete the task you should install the new oil seals appropriately while observing proper direction and lubrication standards. Additionally, check each tie rod assembly for torque specifications and perform a replacement when needed. You must use tool number 09631-33010 as a special service tool for power steering rack installation while applying grease to its rack teeth ends.
