2005 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the rack and pinion power steering gear assembly on 2005 Toyota Avalon?
A: Start power steering rack and pinion assembly servicing by affixing the steering wheel with a seat belt to keep it from rotating. Rotate the front wheels to the straight ahead position and then take off front wheel, fender seals, and both ends of the steering intermediate shaft assembly. Start by detaching the tie rod assemblies (LH and RH) through Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. After that remove the front stabilizer link assemblies and their brackets (LH and RH). Use Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 to take off the pressure feed and return tube assemblies and then remove the power steering rack and pinion assembly by loosening its bolts and nuts while maintaining the nut fixed. Use Special Service Tool 09023-38201 to carefully withdraw the power steering rack heat insulator and turn pressure tubes. Secure the power steering rack and pinion with Special Service Tool 09612-00012 while removing it. Take out the steering tie rods on both sides plus their steering rack boot attachments without hurting the rubber parts. Take out the steering rack end sub-assembly employing Special Service Tool: 09922-10010 and handle the rack guide, power steering control valve, and top oil seal through the appropriate specialized tools. Review the power steering rack for wear and mechanical imbalance while measuring tie rod assembly tightening force. Install fresh oil seals and the steering rack at the correct positions as you apply proper lubrication and alignment procedures. Then add the cylinder end stopper and test for air tightness using 09631-12071 (09633-00010) Special Service Tool.
