2005 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the Clutch Master Cylinder Assembly (MTM) on 2005 Scion xB?
A: The overhaul process of the Clutch Master Cylinder Assembly (MTM) starts by detaching the brake master cylinder sub-assembly then the brake actuator assembly and brake booster assembly before moving onto the clutch pedal spring and clutch master cylinder push rod clevis with hole pin while removing the pin and clip. Leave the clutch fluid in a drain container while washing off all brake fluid exposure from painted surfaces. Loosen the clip to disconnect the clutch reservoir tube from the clutch master cylinder assembly. After that disconnect the clutch master cylinder from the flexible hose tube using Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 while capturing the fluid in a container. To access the clutch master cylinder assembly unfasten two mounting nuts followed by extraction of the clutch master cylinder kit by driving out a slotted spring pin with hammer and pin punch and eliminating both inlet union and grommet alongside push rod clevis disconnection and lock nut removal from push rod. Remove the boot from the cylinder body before pushing the push rod to take out the snap ring using snap ring pliers followed by pulling the push rod out of the cylinder body while watching out for the possible piston exit. Complete the removal of the stop plate together with the piston and its spring while watching out for cylinder body interior damage. Lithium soap base glycol grease should be used to coat all parts before installing the piston with spring inside the cylinder followed by attaching the stop plate onto the push rod prior to inserting the rod back into the cylinder body. The procedure to install the snap ring happens while performing push rod operation followed by boot installation on the cylinder body before tightening the push rod lock nut. One should first install the push rod clevis with lock nut before adding the inlet union and new grommet and driving the slotted spring pin. Reinstall the clutch master cylinder assembly using two nuts that should be tightened to 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Then connect the clutch master cylinder to the flexible hose tube through Special Service Tool: 09023-00101 to reach 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Fasten the clutch reservoir tube to the clip in a manner that avoids twisting while keeping the white mark at the top position. Use MP grease on the hole pin surface and clevis bush joint before installing the hole pin through the clutch pedal assembly and attaching the clevis unit with the clip. Complete installation by placing the clutch pedal spring followed by assembly of brake booster and brake actuator components before taking out the brake master cylinder sub-assembly. Add clutch fluid to the reservoir before bleeding the clutch system while torquing the system to 8.4 Nm (86 kgf-cm, 74 in. lbs.) after which both brake and clutch system fluid leakages must be checked with verification of proper reservoir level and inspection of clutch pedal adjustments.
