2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the Clutch Master Cylinder Assy (MTM) on 2004 Scion xB?
A: The overhaul of Clutch Master Cylinder Assy (MTM) requires bone-dry removal of brake master cylinder sub-assy along with brake actuator assy and brake booster assy followed by clutch pedal spring and clutch master cylinder push rod clevis with hole pin while stopping at the clip and hole pin removal phase. Draining the clutch fluid together with removing the clutch reservoir tube requires loosening its retaining clip. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 to disconnect the clutch master cylinder from its flexible hose tube while containing the fluid in a container. Follow these steps to remove the clutch master cylinder assy by taking off the two nuts before continuing to remove the clutch master cylinder kit through a procedure which includes driving out the slotted spring pin with a pin punch and hammer and then removing the inlet union and grommet and loosening the lock nut to detach the push rod clevis and finally removing the lock nut from the push rod. After removing the boot from the cylinder body push the push rod with snap ring pliers to uninstall the snap ring before pulling out the push rod from the cylinder body keeping in mind that the piston might suddenly exit its opening. Neatly pull out the stop plate and the piston along with spring from the cylinder while maintaining the interior of the cylinder intact. Install parts by covering them with lithium soap base glycol grease followed by piston and spring insertion into the cylinder before adding stop plate to push rod then putting the push rod back into the cylinder body. The push rod installation demands you to first push it while threading in the snap ring then adding the boot before nutting down the lock rod. The installation begins by hanging the push rod clevis and lock nut before installing the intake union along with a new grommet and driving the slotted spring pin. Reinstall the clutch master cylinder assy by tightening two nuts to 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) and join the clutch master cylinder to the flexible hose tube with Special Service Tool: 09023-00100 secured at 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Install the clutch reservoir tube after reconnecting it with the clip using caution to maintain a vertical white mark orientation. First apply MP grease to the hole pin contact surface and clevis bush before installing the clutch pedal assy clevis to hole pin by inserting from the right side of the vehicle then use the clip for securing. The final steps involve installing the clutch pedal spring followed by the brake booster assembly, brake actuator assembly and removal of the brake master cylinder sub-assy. Clutch pipeline bleeding begins with filling the brake reservoir tank with clutch fluid before torquing to 8.4 Nm (86 kgf-cm, 74 in. lbs.). A check for clutch fluid leaks should be performed while inspecting and adjusting the clutch pedal sub-assy.
