2005 Scion xA Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2005 Scion xA?
A: The Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring replacement process starts by following restraint system service rules and performing a battery negative terminal disconnection. Start by directing the front wheels straight ahead and proceed to remove the horn button assembly together with the steering wheel assembly using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). First disconnect the steering column cover using three screws which allows access to remove the clock spring sub-assembly after separating both the Air Bag connector and the connector from the sub-assembly then unfastening the 3 claws. Check the clock spring sub-assembly connector for scratches and cracks and also search for any present cracks dents or chips. Replace the component with a new one if needed. Set the turn signal switch to neutral before installing the new clock spring sub-assembly through 3 claw engagement and connection of the Air Bag connector and clock spring sub-assembly connector. Reattach the steering column cover with its 3 screws before adjusting the clock spring sub-assembly when the ignition switch turns off and you disconnect the battery negative terminal for 90 seconds then turn the clock spring sub-assembly counterclockwise until firm and rotate it clockwise by 2.5 turns to reach the mark alignment. To finish the installation you should add the steering wheel while inspecting the center point after mounting the horn button to check both assemblies along with the SRS warning device.
