2004 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service the front brake caliper on 2004 Toyota Tundra?
A: Start caliper brake service by taking off the front wheel then attach the disc with hub nuts at 113 Nm (1,150 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). Special Service Tool 09023-00100 allows you to disconnect the brake line properly while collecting brake fluid in a container before torquing the connection to 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Unscrew the 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 90 ft. lbs.) torqued 2 mounting bolts of the caliper before taking out the clip, anti-rattle spring, 2 pins, and 2 pads with their corresponding 4 anti-squeal shims. Reuse the anti-rattle spring and clip only if they remain in good condition. Carry out disassembly by first unfastening the 4 cylinder boot set rings and boots with the use of a screwdriver before extracting the pistons from the cylinder by holding them on a wooden plate and applying alternate compressed air pressure through a pad to prevent injuries. Disassembling the 4 piston seals becomes possible through screwdriver usage. The inspector should use a ruler to measure pad lining thickness while checking that the minimum thickness requires 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) to prevent replacement. The disc thickness should be measured with a micrometer until it reaches 26.0 mm (1.024 inch) before determining a new disc is needed. Use a dial indicator to measure disc runout at 10 mm (0.39 inch) distance from the edge. Replace or grind the defective disc if its runout reaches 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Reinstall the disc until reaching minimal runout through different positioning. The order of disassembly is reversed in reassembly by implementing lithium soap base glycol grease and disc brake grease to specified components followed by the reverse sequence of removal steps. Post-installation requires filling the brake fluid reservoir while bleeding the brake system before inspecting for any fluid leakage.
